Individual Career And Academic Plans (ICAP)

What is ICAP?

Life beyond high school is different from what it used to be. By the year 2025, three out of four Oklahoma jobs will require education or training beyond high school. The Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP) is a statewide, multi-year process that guides students as they explore career, academic and post-secondary opportunities. Families, students and educators collaborate to develop the ICAP, which equips students with the awareness, knowledge and skills to create their own meaningful exploration of college and career opportunities. ICAP, which is outlined in state law, is an evolving document that reflects students’ changing passions, aptitudes, interests and growth. It is a student-driven, ongoing process that actively engages students, enabling them to:

  • Understand their own interests, strengths, values and learning styles 

  • Create a vision of their future

  • Develop individual goals 

  • Prepare a personal plan for achieving their vision and goals

  • Access quality career guidance activities

  • Connect the relevance of education to future aspirations

  • Select a pathway that aligns with defined career, college and life goals

What does an ICAP include?

The ICAP includes, but is not limited to:

  • Career and college interest surveys

  • Written post-secondary and workforce goals

  • An intentional sequence of courses that reflect progress toward a post-secondary goal

  • Academic progress, courses taken, assessment scores, any remediation or credit recovery, any AP, concurrent or dual enrollment credits earned, career certificates, certification or endorsements

  • Experience-based learning, in-service learning, and/or work environment activities

How is it implemented?

As outlined in state law, all 9th-grade students in Oklahoma are required to create an ICAP. In addition, ICAP is a graduation requirement that will be noted on high school transcripts. In order for 9th graders to create a meaningful ICAP, we must expose students to the process of creating an ICAP prior to high school. Therefore, our students will begin the process in middle school with introductory elements at both 6th and 7th grades. In grades 8th through 12th, students will have the opportunity to collect information for their ICAP in an online ePortfolio.

ICAP Process at NPS

Grades 6-7

Students in grades 6-7 use the Oklahoma Career Guide to develop and maintain their ICAPs. They will explore a world of possibilities, make decisions about the future, and prepare for the next step in planning education and career goals and action steps.

Parent receive an access code from your student by email or text. If parents have not received a code, please have your student login and create one under their account.

Grades 8-12

All NPS students in grades 8-12 will develop and maintain an ePortfolio using SchooLinks. SchooLinks is a college and career readiness platform that will help students make academic decisions for high school that can benefit them beyond graduation. SchooLinks allows students to discover their interests and strengths, explore colleges and careers, and create an individualized career and academic plan that best reflects their post-secondary goals. SchooLinks will be accessible by students, parents, counselors, and staff.
