Norman Public Schools Celebrates Arts Education Pioneer with Auditorium Naming
NORMAN, OK (August 7, 2024) — Norman Public Schools (NPS) unveiled the name of the auditorium inside the Center for Arts and Learning. The space is now called the Benson Auditorium, named after Dr. Brad Benson, former NPS Director of Fine Arts. Benson along with NPS Fine Arts educators, family and friends attended a ceremony to celebrate the new name Wednesday night.
Benson dedicated 44 years to NPS, serving as Director of Fine Arts for 22 years. His career was marked by a passionate advocacy for arts education and numerous professional accolades, including the Governor's Arts Award for Arts in Education.
"Naming this auditorium after Dr. Benson is a fitting tribute to his decades of service and dedication to arts education in Norman. This state-of-the-art space will carry forward Dr. Benson's legacy, inspiring future generations of students and educators,” said Superintendent Dr. Nick Migliorino. “This auditorium represents an exciting opportunity for the Norman community to be an integral part of NPS. We envision this space as a hub where our schools and community can come together, celebrate the arts, and create lasting partnerships that enrich the educational experience for all."
Dr. Evelyn Kwanza, NPS Fine Arts Director, added, "The Benson Auditorium and the entire Center for Arts and Learning will provide unparalleled opportunities for our students to explore and excel in the arts. It's a fitting tribute to Dr. Benson's legacy and an exciting new chapter for arts education in Norman."
The Benson auditorium boasts high-capacity seating with reconfigurable options. The facility also features ample parking and multiple classrooms, making it a versatile space for district-wide events and fine arts performances.
The venue will host its first major event on Thursday, as NPS kicks off the 2024-2025 school year with its annual convocation.
"The Center for Arts and Learning and the Benson Auditorium represents our district's dedication to providing top-tier facilities for our students and community,” said Justin Milner, Associate Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer. “This space will foster creativity, learning, and community engagement for generations to come."
The 60,000-square-foot CAL, formerly known as Journey Church, was purchased by the district as part of a voter-approved 2023 bond initiative. The entire building is being transformed into a hub for the district. The Center for Arts and Learning will officially open its doors later this fall.
