Norman Public Schools Counselor Achieves State First in ASCA Certification

NORMAN, OK (September 23, 2024) — Norman Public Schools (NPS) is proud to announce that Missy Smith, school counselor at Lincoln Elementary, is the first school counselor in Oklahoma to become an American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Certified School Counselor. She is one of 57 school counselors around the country recognized this year.

The ASCA certification is a prestigious credential that recognizes school counselors who have met rigorous national standards of practice. Certified counselors demonstrate expertise in delivering comprehensive school counseling programs that support students' academic, career and social/emotional development.

"We are immensely proud of Missy Smith for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Dr. Nick Migliorino, NPS Superintendent. “Her dedication to professional excellence exemplifies our district's commitment to providing the best possible support for our students. This certification not only benefits Lincoln Elementary but raises the bar for counseling services throughout our entire district and the state of Oklahoma."

This achievement not only highlights Smith's exceptional skills and dedication but also underscores NPS' commitment to providing high-quality counseling services to its students, setting a new standard for school counseling programs across the state.

“Missy is continuously working to grow as a school counselor,” said Kitrena Hime, NPS Director of Counseling and Student Advocacy. “She also works to develop other school counselors and mental health professionals across our state and in Norman. As a school counseling advocate, her leadership elevates our district programs.”

Smith will be honored during a special ceremony at the American School Counselor Association’s Annual Conference next summer.
