Norman Public School Foundation Hosts Annual STEM Tank Challenge

NORMAN, OK – More than 200 elementary and middle school students today participated in the Norman Public School Foundation’s STEM Tank Challenge, which showcased students’ innovation and creativity as they presented their STEM-based solutions to real-world challenges.

Presented by Mathnasium, the STEM Tank Challenge follows a “Shark Tank” style format, where 20 student teams present their research and prototypes to a panel of judges. Over the past several months, students worked diligently to imagine, design and build devices aimed at improving the lives of individuals living with an illness or disease.

“STEM Tank is an opportunity for students to dream big and see their ideas come to life,” said Alesha Leemaster, executive director of the Norman Public School Foundation. “The program encourages students to develop critical science, technology, engineering and math skills, while also fostering a collaborative environment where students cultivate team building and public presentation skills. These are important experiences that will help students navigate a variety of circumstances they might face later in life - both personally and professionally.”

Six student teams were recognized with awards. They are:

  • Washington Elementary - Christina Rehkop Innovation Award, presented by Mathnasium

  • Kennedy Elementary - Showstopper Award, presented by Manhattan Construction

  • Irving Middle School - Community Impact Award, presented by AlphaBest Education

  • Roosevelt Elementary - Sustainability Award, presented by Weokie Federal Credit Union

  • Truman Elementary - Precision Award, presented by IMMY

  • Monroe Elementary - Energizing Life Award, presented by OG&E
