Norman, OK – In a move aimed at enhancing student and community resources, Norman Public Schools (NPS) will soon take ownership of the recreation centers at Whittier and Irving Middle Schools from the City of Norman. This transfer of ownership, approved by the Norman City Council on February 11 and approved tonight by the NPS Board, will allow NPS to invest in these facilities and continue offering quality services for students and the broader community.

NPS and the City of Norman will enter into an agreement to ensure continuity for the community, as the City of Norman’s Parks & Recreation teams will still be able to run after school programs at the facilities, ensuring that students, their families and the community continue to have access to these valuable services.

“We are excited to take this step forward in strengthening our community partnerships and providing additional resources for our students,” said Dr. Nick Migliorino, Superintendent. “Owning and investing in these properties has been a long standing goal for NPS and I am grateful to our associate superintendent and chief operations officer, Justin Milner, for working alongside the City to help make this happen. This will allow us to create even more opportunities for our students and expand the services available to our families. We are committed to ensuring that this transition benefits everyone involved.”

“We appreciate the longtime partnership and collaboration of Norman Public Schools,” said Jason Olsen, Director of Norman Parks & Recreation. “As our community continues to grow, we will continue to work together to best serve the community. We share in their excitement of being able to utilize these spaces to expand the services of NPS, and look forward to continuing quality childcare programs for Norman families.”
