Norman Public Schools Announces New Spanish Language Academy for 2025-26 School Year
Norman, OK – Norman Public Schools (NPS) is excited to introduce a new and innovative opportunity for PreK-5th grade students beginning in the 2025-26 school year: the Spanish Language Academy (SLA). This program is open to any family and will be located on the campus of Truman Primary and Truman Elementary. While this academy is open to students from surrounding areas, families who reside within our district boundaries will have priority enrollment.
“We are thrilled to introduce the Spanish Language Academy to our students and families,” said Dr. Nick Migliorino, Superintendent of Norman Public Schools. “This program represents an exciting step forward in our commitment to providing a world-class education that prepares students for success. By offering bilingual instruction, we’re not only helping students become proficient in Spanish and English, but we’re also developing essential skills that will serve them for years to come. This initiative aligns with our mission to prepare and inspire all students to achieve their full potential, equipping them with the tools to succeed in an ever-changing environment. We look forward to watching our students thrive in this innovative and enriching learning experience.
The Spanish Language Academy will be staffed by a dedicated team of professionals, led by a program coordinator who will be responsible for overseeing the program’s success and ensuring its smooth operation. The teaching staff will be certified in Early Childhood or Elementary Education, with each teacher bringing expertise in fostering a positive, engaging learning environment.
The core goals of the Spanish Language Academy are to develop proficiency in both Spanish and English, ensuring that students not only learn a second language but are able to excel academically in both languages. The program aims to support students' academic success, with the same high standards as English-only instruction, and to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
Research supports the numerous benefits of an early start in language acquisition, particularly in bilingual education. Studies show that early language learning helps students increase their language capacity, leading to stronger problem-solving and listening skills.
